Lions Report: Weird game. It was never in doubt that the Lions would win it. However, for a stress-free win, it left a little bit of bad taste in my mouth. Yes, a win is a win. And anytime you win in the NFL, that’s a good thing. Especially against a team you should beat. But there’s a lot of improvements the Lions need to make. I’m not going to recap the game. Just offer some random commentary.
Terrion Arnold - His transformation into Jeff Okudah 2.0 is nearly complete. It’s clear he can’t cover anyone (decent) without drawing a pass interference or holding penalty. The holding penalty he got called for today cost us a safety, and he had another pass interference penalty. Pro Football Focus has him rated 135th out of 165 cornerbacks. I don’t think I want the Lions to draft another Ohio State cornerback. What do you do with him?
Penei Sewell - Stud. I don’t talk about him enough. The way he gets out into open space to block linebackers and the secondary is amazing. Great footwork, tough as nails.
Amon-Ra St. Brown - The same. Yep, he’s a clutch receiver and fearless on crossing routes. He’s also a great blocker. I’m glad the TV commentators are mentioning that part of his game. He’s a complete player and a wide receiver anti-diva.
John Morton - My concerns from the first game at Green Bay have been fully addressed. He’s found a good rhythm with the offense, and he’s showing occasional flourishes with creative plays. I loved the call with David Montgomery lining up at QB, taking the shotgun snap, faking the run and then throwing the pass to Brock Wright.
Lions Secondary - We’re five games into the season and we’re right back where we were a few years ago. The Lions secondary is a problem. Arnold is looking like a bust, Ennis Rakestraw is out for the season, D. J. Reed was hurt this week, and we’re pulling guys off the street and asking them to cover Ja’Maar Chase. Brad Holmes needs to get some bodies in here.
Cincinnati Football Team - With Joe Burrow, they are the Bengals. Without him, they are back to being the Bungles. That first half was brutal for them and Jake Browning. Yes, the Lions lost focus, and they came back to make it a little interesting in the second half. But that’s a bad team. Joe Burrow was hiding a lot of flaws for them. That team was in the Super Bowl a few years ago, they’ve got a QB in his prime, and they’re going backwards. Say goodbye to Zac Taylor. Dead man walking.
Sam LaPorta - A healthy LaPorta is a problem for most NFL defenses. It’s good to have him back.
I’ve got a special announcement. Next week’s Lions report is going to be written by a guest writer, our very own Mike Weglarz. Mike’s a regular reader of the Lion’s Report, and often vocal about perceived late postings. I look forward to his commentary, and a timely submission. Make sure it’s on time, Wags. Send it to me and I'll get it posted.
