Lions Report: I wrote before the game that the Lions just needed to win. That’s it. Well, they won. Just barely. This report is a bit of a challenge to write. Yes, we won the game, but other than Jahmyr Gibbs, there wasn’t a whole lot of positive aspects to the Lions on either side of the ball. I thought about using Copilot or WagsGPT to write the report, but I decided against it.
Let’s start with the positive. Note I said positive and not positives. It was Jahmyr Gibbs. That’s pretty much it. Fifteen carries for 219 yards and two long touchdown runs of 69 and 49 yards. He averaged 14.6 yards per carry. Are you kidding me? If it wasn’t for him, we would have lost that game. I’m glad he was able to pull the rabbits out of his hat.
You could make a case for Jake Bates as well. However, in this new age of kicking, you expect your kickers to make 50+ yarders. I’ll give him credit, though. That 59-yard field goal to tie the game near the end of regulation was solid. No butterflies for him.
Dan Campbell (Coach)? He kept the Lions focused and ground out a win. That was effing ugly. Sometimes, you have to grind out an ugly win. Even with some VERY questionable calls going against your team.
Now on to the bad stuff. Where do we begin?
Defensive line? Jameis Winston was only sacked once, threw for 366 yards and two touchdowns with only 1 interception. He had all day back there. The defensive line did no favors to a beat-up Lions secondary.
Offensive line? It was a fire drill in the Lions backfield all game. This is the second game in a row where Jared Goff was under pressure all game and had happy feet.
Dan Campbell (Offensive Coordinator) - I’ve seen enough. I don’t think Dan Campbell is the answer. The offense was pedestrian and had no flow to it. I felt like I was watching a high school football game. I get he wanted to take the call sheet from John Morton because Morton wasn’t doing what he wanted done. However, he needs to coach up Morton and hand it back to him. No, Campbell doesn’t get credit for the two long touchdown runs by Gibbs. Those weren’t a result of some clever scheme. Gibbs made Giants miss on both of them.
Lions secondary? Well, as mentioned before, the Lions defensive line was not very good today. Even considering that, the Lions gave 10 passing plays of more than 20 yards. That’s a ton of chunk plays. We’re lucky we won giving up that many big plays.
Lions overall? We let a New York Giants team missing Jaxson Dart, Malik Nabers, Cam Skattebo, and Kayvon Thibodeaux to hang around and nearly win the game.
All that being said, a stressful win is better than a shitty loss. I’ll take it. I’m just not feeling very good heading into the Thanksgiving game against Green Bay.
